Long-time Marriage Encounter icon Ray Mahlo joined his wife Ruth in eternity in 2007. Ruth passed away in 2003.
Ray and Ruth were an active Lay Team Couple for United Marriage Encounter. Ray was known in his last years for being a staunch recruiter of couples for UME Weekends. Ray was an excellent writer and often corresponded with other couples and the UME office. He was well known for his continuing support of UME. His latest interest was to encourage UME Alumni (widows and widowers) to come to Celebration 2007. He wrote encouraging articles for Bridges, The UME Alumni newsletter. Ray prayed for us! He kept the UME ministry and encountered couples constantly in his prayers and thoughts. Ray was the epitome of the behind-the-scenes person who kept all of us gently in mind. He consistently supported UME. He funded and initiated a memorial shelf with flowers in honor of the UME people who have died. His gift will keep those flower arrangements fresh long into the future.
Ray and Ruth teamed 21 Weekends beginning in 1993. They often transported other Team Couples to and from the local airport and carefully watched over their cars when needed, and consistently attended Sing-offs and Afterglows.
Although Ray was unable to travel the last few years, he maintained his sense of humor and writing skills. Man y people were touched by Ray through his writing and interest in life. A memorial fund is being established in Ray's name. Contributions may be sent to the UME office at 2610 Park Ave., Muscatine, IA 52761.
